I had been looking to get my 400 sbc to 500hp however with the constraints of time and cash I was not able to get the desired results with few of the parts coming real short of my expectations.

I was given an option of scat 9000 crank however most of them are balanced externally and if I want anything balanced internally than it would require a forged crank and the overall cost of that easily goes beyond $800 so in the end for my 400 sbc I had cut a few corners. Another friend of mine who tried this from his 408 sbc needed $7500 and was able to get 450 hp out of it. However the big point here is that the block was already available else he would have to fork out another $2500.

So all in all I had to settle for a bit less with my 400 sbc and was able to get to around 435 hp. In the end the take I got from my 400 sbc experiment is that building a cheap motor with high power is quite difficult unless we know closely a machine shop who might be able to give heavy discounts or it would be better to go for a shorter block which is stronger.
